I really like the Monsters!

boaphile Jul 10, 2007 08:56 AM

One of the best things about the Monster Tail bloodline is they have LOTS of babies. I mean lots of babies. Here is a litter from a seven year old Monster Tail Hypo from the original Monster Tail females very first litter:

She is the gravid in this shot and still looking pretty stinking nice if I say so myself. Here she is looking to protect those babies yesterday afternoon:

I love how their little heads point up like periscopes:

I had to move them off the shelf for a better look. Normally I just leave them for a while but I was pretty anxious to see these puppies! Now that's a pile of babies!

I counted them twice. 49 on the first count and 50 on the second. It has been a long time since I had a litter this big. Four years I guess and it was this female mother, the original Monster Tail, that did it. 53 babies in 2003. More Hypos than not. More Jungles than not. Nothing to complain about. There is one really really dark one in the litter which is perplexing as neither parent is dark at all. I don't know what to make of that. There are a few really nice ones in the mess:

Now we have to wait for them to shed.

What do you think?

The second and third photos of the "heads up" pose is priceless
Great show! Congrats on some super boas......

I took one week off without checking this forum and there's been a proven co-dom (aztecs), more (beautiful) evidence on the paradigm project, axanthic and hypo Leopards, another sharp snow, sunglow arabesques (the best so far I must say) Am I awake??....wow. Unreal.

Wow! 49 or 50 in the litter. What a difference a day can make in the total count?

boaphile Jul 10, 2007 10:37 PM

Mr. "G",

You know how I showed her to you about 4:00 PM on that shelf? When you left, after watering the last two isles, a little after 5:00 PM, including her cage mind you, I went right down to check on her. I could see that she was already skinny, a sure sign that the deed is done. Since it was fewer days than I expected, I assumed slugs, but MUCH to my delight, there was that one baby peering over her back wiggling his little head around. Another sure sign but this one that at least that baby is full term and fine as frog hair. So I ran, ran I tell you to catch you before you got away, so you could revel in the moment with me. You know how I dance and act like a little kid with his very first puppy every time I find fresh babies? But, alas you were already gone and your stubborn refusal to get a cell phone meant I could not call you to have you return for a better look. No, you were gone on your long drive home after a long day shoveling Boa Poop and watering the same.

Just so you know, she was actually up there pushing out those dozens of babies the very moment you were watering her just inches below that baby laden shelf. I'll bet you wish you had checked her again before you left! If you had, I still would have been tickled with only 35 or 40 babies perhaps... right? Just kidding!

I had to be content looking at them while holding a mirror over her so I could see what was on the other side of her ample coils. I couldn't wait! The humidity from the babies kept fogging up the mirror too! I'm not kidding! It was more than an hour before she was actually done and I could get a better look at all the youngsters. She was completely allert the entire time looking to nail me should I threaten those kidletts.

I will be forced to show them to you in a few days next time you are here and again later after they shed. I can't wait for that!!

Great stuff!!!

Thanks Mr. "G" for making an extremely rare appearance here on the Boa Forum! See you soon and yes you better believe it! We are definitely going to Las Margaritas to celebrate next time you are here! As if there was ever any doubt.

Thank you one and all for the great comments! Momma is a happy girl now that those babies are out and Daddy is proud of this his second litter of Monster Tail Hypo Jungles. Only a handful last year from this years less attractive sister, but wonderful kids just the same. Here is one male that is a half brother to these babies:

Same Daddy, different Mommy.

Here is the proud PaPa:

With the much larger litter this time and more crazy patterns on some than any we had last year, I really can't wait to get a better look at them after they shed. I just hope they don't look too good. I really can't just keep on building more cages...

isn't that litter half mine ?????? LOL. There might not be a lot of wiggy stuff going on but the color from the dam is going to be insane in the babies. Until I got my jungle hypo monster tail, I didn't relize how orange red the color is compared to my other hypo's. Anyway gotta go & send some snake out TODAY.
