Bad Year

stylindawg2006 Jul 10, 2007 01:58 PM

Has anyone else had a bad breeding season for corns this year? Out of 9 breeder females I only had 1 drop eggs, 9 to be exact. All of the babies are Amels. But there seems to be no other action going on. I have tried everything I can think of. A friend of mine is having just as bad of a season.

I think part of the problem is the colling period got messed up because of unusually warm weather in January so I think they came out of hibernation a little early. Any ideas?

there are several of us that have had less then stellar results
I lost a couple of clutches. One clutch went about 30 days and then they all went bad and another clutch went around 60 days and then they all just colapsed and started molding. One day they looked good two days later boom , bad.
I also had a couple of clutches where only about half hatched.
I would say overall for the season when you count all eggs that were laid I only had about a 50% hatch rate.
Not good at all.
I think part of it could be attributed to brumation temps and I also believe part of it in my case had to do with a temperature spike and possibly too much moisture while incubating.

not sure what the reasons are but I will be doing things a little differently next season.

Sorry to hear about some of you guys having a bad year.So far,I've had 10 babies to hatch, that was out of a clutch of 11,the bad egg turned almost immediately and was left with the rest of them. All I can do is hope the rest do o.k. Jeff

there are quite a few of us having a bad breeding season. I have had a lot of duds, lost a couple of entire clutches.
I have lost snakes in the egg after they make it all through incubation. I have had one hatchling die for unknown reasons after taking its first meal, was found biting itself. Not a whole lot of fun this year.

Yeah you could say I've had a bad year also. I lost 3 clutchs due to a faulty thermostat!! Luckily though one of my females double clutched giving me 17 good eggs that are het lavender.

I don't breed anything at all now, but chat with many people in person and on line. On line it seems a few ppl I chat with have less than average years. On more than corns too.

The local guy I use to chat with a lot has not chatted with me in some time. Maybe he's mad at me? But I'm so likable lol.
I do wish we chatted like we use to.

But if anyone recalls I was asking about similarities across the country. I'm sure there are factors we do not understand.

I try to chat with 3 ppl on gilas. Since they are just tough to breed period it is hard to figure out if there is something in common or gilas are just a bear to breed.

As they say always next year. Or even later this year..
As always I wish the best.

I am not a pro by any means but have sucessfully bred two of my corns the past couple years and this year have gotten the best results. She laid 14 healthy sized eggs that have all made it to day 45 so far, I will keep you all posted.

I've had pretty good luck this year. It's my first year breeding Corns and Kings. Only bred venomous up til now. I didn't cool my stuff very low this year, and I lost 4 kingsnake clutches and 1 Moroccan cobra clutch. I'm told they needed to be cooled more than Corns and other Cobras do.

I've hatched out the following:

9 Corn clutches for a total of 46.49 plus 34 I haven't sexed yet, and 3 dbl clutches of 12, 16, and 11 due to hatch by 07/25.

2 Apalachicola King clutches for a total of 16.18

1 B&W Spitter clutch of 7.13

1 Yellow Sumatran Spitter clutch of 5 that I haven't sexed yet.

I didn't use an incubator. I put eggs in 60/40 vermiculite/water mix in 6 3/4" deli cups with no holes in the sides, and just a few tiny pin holes in the top, so bugs can't get in. I put the deli cups on a shelf in my snake room where it stayed 80-83 degrees all the time. The room temp is controlled by a Helix Control and an oil filled radiator lookin electric heater, and the A/C vent in that bedroom.

The Corns hatched out in an average of 62.6 days.

The Kings hatched out in an average of 53.5 days.

The B&W Spitters hatched in 62 days.

The Yellow Sumatran Spitters in 74 days.

Yeah I've had quite a few things not go at all or just lay slugs this year. On top of that some of the good eggs have gone bad too. I agree with you the weather had something to do woth it.
Here in California in October the temps jumped up 90-100 degrees for a few weeks and I think that definitely had an effect.

Hate to jump on the band wagon but my year has not been much better. I've had small clutches, lost a few eggs from every clutch, and the eggs that are still cooking aren't the prettiest.
I'll still produce a few and hopefully they will prove out a long running project.
