good pet pythons

balisong Jul 10, 2007 04:53 PM

I'm trying to find a python with a good temperment and does not get any bigger than 8 feet. I was thinking along the lines of a spotted python, jaguar carpet python, or a jungle carpet python. The problem is that I just can't seem to find any info on the carpets that matches with other sites. 1 site may say they are docile and only get 6 feet another may say they get over 9 feet and are a tad aggressive. I also can't seem to find a lot of information on spotted pythons some sites say they are docile others say flighty and all the lengths are in centimeters.

Any of the Antaresia would be good. Children's are typically very docile. I would expect spotteds to be similar, but I do not have experience with them. Anthills are great little snakes but very pricey. I'd also suggest Savus, which can be aggressive in their enclosures but tend to calm down immediately once you take them out. Both of the Savus I have are very easy to handle.

Woma pythons are awesome. They get between 5-6 feet, have great appetites, never have shedding problems and have terrific temperments. I would highly recommend them.

Also, VERY tough to beat an Irian Jaya Carpet (West Papuan Carpet) if you want the best of both worlds in a great pet snake that stays on the smaller size, and makes a great display animal.

They meet your size requirements, and are sweethearts!

My adult spotted python has never offered to bite. Even when he was scared of me. Now that he's used to me, he's as calm as any corn snake. I reach into his cage with my bare hand and pick his body up right in front of his face. His reaction is to turn around and go the other way.

My little one used to be hell on wheels but that changed with a few weeks of handling.

I also agree with the Irian Jaya carpet recommendation.

Thanks everyone for the info. I think I'll go with the irian because after checking with a breeder I know that's the most affordable right now.
