Is it OK to re-freeze an f/t meal?

brewhead Aug 18, 2003 02:19 PM

I have not seen the answer to this in here. My son had thawed a meal out for his BP before we knew he was starting his shed. His eyes were just starting to cloud. We try to feed him anyways and he didn't want anything to do with it. We weren't sure if it was ok to refreeze.

Thanks,

Shouldn't be a problem, but I wouldn't exceed 2 freeze/thaw cycles... At moment of death, decay begins, (not to sound like a Marilyn Manson song), which begins with acids in the stomach eating through the lining, etc...

And found that you can thaw and re-freeze twice (remove from freezer, thaw at ambient for 4hrs, drop in 90deg F water for 3mins, remove, attempt feeding). At the third thawing, if the snake doesn't take, throw it out. You will notice the belly of the mouse/rat geting dark coloured like the blood is pooling. That's getting ripe. The skin will break easily after too many thawings. Experiment a bit.

Thanks all.

This go round we just tossed them. This was the only time he has refused a meal. He is a very good eater and if not for going into his shed I think he would have eaten. He has since eaten; his first rat!
