Predators (mice/rats/ferrets) togeather?

embibble Jul 11, 2007 05:18 AM

I have read that many animals can since that a pretator is near by by there smell. And the fear of such hinders litters production, and food consumtion and length of life. You see though, I keep my ferret in the same room with the mice. Will this cause any problems? I mean they have been kept with ferrets their whole life - do they get used to it? And what about mice and rats? I know a lot of breeders keep mice and rats in the same room.

Thanks

I guess I already posted something similar to this and just forgot. I got another question though. Say I where to raise rats, and the breeders of course would end up huge. What do you do with extra large rats if they are too large to feed to anything? Also, Do you use breeders past there age according to fancy rat/mouse breeders? (what age do you stop them breeding, 6 months? 1 yr?)

Breeders that get too big....well, I did recently solve that by getting three baby boa constrictors for the ones that my SST can't handle. If that is not an option....I sell mine to the pet store for other people with XL snakes. You can freeze them and still sell them and not be feeding them too. My ferrets will eat them but anything over the size of a small rat makes a horrid mess and smell in the hot humid summer weather.

I tend to get 6 months plus or minus a month out of mice and probably 8 out of a rat. Say 6 litters to any given mom. Then some will still be going but many will drop to a point that it isn't worth maintaining them.
