Lighting equipment

I know this subject has been brought up many times in the past but I have searched part of the forum archive and can't seem to find anything. Does anyone have information on the Stubby II light used to walk the cuts? Also, I remember another light which was suppose to be just as good but a lot cheaper. Any info would help.

Thanks,

Trey

Well bayco makes the cheaper version. In fact recently mine took a dump, so I bought a rechagable Bayco light at Home Depot. Works great, it will light up a cut for about 2 hours, then I can recharge it in my car (comes with Ac/Dc chargers) in about an hour. Also if it comes down to it i can remove the battery and use the 12v cord with my old battery setup.

They have a 3Watt LED headlamp. Pair that up with a good LED flashlight (either an array of LEDS or a 3-5Watt single)

Why?

You do not have to lug a heavy battery, you do not have all the shadows that the Stubby cast, You have a nice wash of light (not a pencil beam), you can see more than 10 feet.

BTW, the headlamp is $25 and runs on AA's... They also have a 2AA 3Watt flashlight for $25 that is worth having...

I now will not use my stubby for anything but working on the car.

Unless you are dead set on getting a stubby, I really would try some LED lights. They weigh so much less. You can have headlamps and flashlights. 3 to 5 watt lights are not that expensive. You can try that 152 led uber light from Ebay. Other observers had them in June and cost only 20 to 30 bucks.

Trust me... The days of the stubby are long gone. LED is where it's at.

Good Luck,

I still like the light thrown by the stubby better. You really can not complain about weight with the new rechargable cordless bayco lights. No more lugging around a 12v battery just the stubby.

I have a davis control, a stubby and 2 bayco lights but find the LED helps me see better. To each their own, we are not all clones of each other.

But before investing in anything I would at least recommend looking at the LED option.

To me I can see better beyond the 10 or so feet and inside that 10 or so feet I have far fewer shadows. I use a headlamp and a flashlight and basically converge the beam on any spot of interest as I walk. With the two angles of light it is washes away shadows.

I still like my Stubby and will use it for any serious field collecting but for incredible light output and fit in the pocket portability, I got this tiny LED light:
Fenix P3D CREE LED Version 2xCR123 Lithium Flashlight - 6 levels
Part#: FenP3DCE
Manufacturer Part#: P3DCree
$58.50

--and love it. A friend who traveled with me last month to the Bend is now out buying one. It really is tiny and it is way more powerful than most large LED lights. For me, it will be my backup light and occasional main light when I don't want to wear a pack with the Stubby battery. --Henry W

If maximum light is what you're looking for the best option is a high quality dive light. You can get them in both a xenon bulb or LED configuration.

Are you coming out soon? Watch out for lg. mammals. I actually saw a bear (150 lbs or more) on the weekend of the 10th June about 10 miles from your place along the Terlingua Creek. Mountain lions have also been reported recently along 118.

I use the Inova 7 led -very lightweight and bright. Another a little larger, is the 4 led light by energizer- bought at hardware store in Ft. davis last year. Works very well $12?

Any hognose eggs?

Call me when you head this way.
