some OT pics from the Dallas aquarium

TimOsborne Jul 11, 2007 10:18 AM

So.. I during my traveling last week and I passed through the Dallas Aquarium.. Calling it an aquarium is not really fair, as there are more "air" breathing animals then water dwellers.. but it was fun none-the-less.

Here are a few of the pics.. quality sucks.. but enjoy!

Jasmine - It is a Leafy Sea Dragon. They had another critter in there called a "weedy sea dragon" too which is similar.. but I did not get a good photo of them..

They are closely related to sea horses.. and if I remember correctly are found off the southern Australian coast..

Yeah.. I have a 1d MKIII too.. which is a fantastic camera.. but it is heavy and a pain to carry all day. I find myself using the 20d much much more.. It has everything you need and so much lighter then the 1d..

I especially like the seahorse!!! If those were easy to keep as pets, I would definitely have one! I loved a show completely centered on seahorses (and related species) that they had at the Chicago Aquarium a few years ago.

Thanks Renee! I love sea horses!! I am going to do a salt water tank in the near future and have been researching sea horses.. I think I am going to try my hand at them and see what I can do.

I think the quality is good, but I do know how great most of the picture you post are!

Two weeks ago I was at Disney Animal Kingdom, Sea World, and Mote Marine - but I only took a few pics. I have been so busy I have not really figured out if any are decent.

do you get good pics through the glass. i have tried cloe up far away flash on flasgo off macro on macro off iso on iso off any combination i can think of together seprate etc and i still get blurrs every time i try to take pics thru glass so whats the secret specialy at a aquarium/zoo cause the zoo here the fish/reptile room is dark but they have the cages/tanks somewhat lit up

TimOsborne Jul 11, 2007 12:17 PM

Tim - there are some tricks to shooting through glass -

First - try to put the lens close, or touching the glass. If you can't put it right on the glass, try to use your free hand to sheild the lens from the flash.

second, if you are back away from the glass, do not shoot directly at the subject, make it on an angle so the light reflections bounce away from you instead of back to the camera. You can also put the subject off center and crop removing the the flash reflection.

third.. manual focus is your friend.. auto focus will sometimes pick up a scratch in the glass or particle in the water.. use the manual focus and manually expose the shot if possible.

Last - it takes some luck. Find a place on the glass with little to no smudges and scratches (much easier said then done usually). Play with it and take lots of pics. It helps if you are there sometime other then peak hours so you don't have to deal with a lot of people..

Great pictures! I like the funky seahorse and the spotted ray. My favorite one, though, is the Moorish Idol. Thats a great shot of it, and it happens to be one of my favorite fishes in the sea.

The morrish idol was a cool little fish! I waited for like 20 minutes for it to get sideways so I could get a good pic!
