Black milk "double clutching"

nategodin Jul 11, 2007 10:36 AM

Nope, not double clutching as in laying two clutches per year... Cher only produced two fertile eggs! She laid these two and one slug on or about July 1st, and I waited a week for more, but they never came! I took her to the vet yesterday for x-rays just to make sure she got them all out, so it looks like this is all we're getting for 2007. Ah well, at least she wasn't eggbound! I hope all the other gaigeae breeders out there are having a better year.

That sucks Nate but two is better than none!

Was this her first year breeding?

I guess two is better than none... I almost didn't breed them at all this year because I still had so many hatchlings and yearlings left over (she laid 6 good eggs in '05, 8 last year), but I was able to sell all of the '06s and all but one of my remaining '05s at the All New England show in early April. Since they started breeding a little late, I suspect that she might have already started to re-absorb her follicles, or maybe she just didn't produce many in the first place. Here's a picture from happier times...

Nate:
My blacks are late this year too. Both females are in their pre-egg lay shed now which is about two months behind last year. I'm guessing they are late because they had such huge clutches (one had 15 and 7 and the other had 11. All fertile.) I had so many babies I had to wholesale some of them.
