Leioheterodon madagascariensis

Arrak Jul 11, 2007 05:55 PM

Hi,
The 8th of May this year I was lucky to have six eggs from my L. madagascariensis. They were incubated in a wet incubator at a temperature of 28-29 degrees Celsius (82-84 degrees F). Today, the 12th of July, they haven't hatched, but are swollen and likes very fine. How long should I wait before I cut them open?

I don't have any experience with Leioheterodon madagascariensis but I would leave them alone and let them take their course. If you don't have any experience cutting eggs I wouldn't touch them. They should hatch on their own.

Thanks for your answer. Well, I have the experience, but to cut the eggs I have to know if they are ready to hatch or not. I can't find anything written how long the eggs should be incubated at the temperature I mentioned. It would be a pity if the young suffocated because they couldn't come out by themselves. The species isn't bred that often. At least not in Europe.

I think it's way to early to be concerned. Don't tri-colored hogs go up into the 80's of days? I think it's asking for trouble to cut the eggs.

Last night the eggs started to collapse and that use to be a sign of coming hatching, at least among colubrids. So I will wait a couple of days more.

You should have hatchlings by Sunday at that temp.

Yes, I agree! Short, stout and immediately ready to spread their hoods. One is out of four eggs splitted. The remaining two eggs did I cut open this afternoon. I didn't have the courage to wait any longer. Very satisfying to have captive bred animals instead of wild caught, I think. Suits me fine. I'll do the same with my young. BTW, I got sex out of sex eggs. So I'm very satisfied.
