skyliner Aug 18, 2003 03:21 PM

Anyone remember spike the WD that i rescued a while back,if not ill fill u in:spike has no claws so cant climb,he tries but fails miserably, anyway i took this pic earlier because hes got a new pasttime, diggin burrows and deep 1's at that this one goes under about 6inches.Im just curious is this a normal attribute for a WD?Do any of u guys give em the chance to do so,and if u do,do they dig burrows or still sleep in the trees?

I think it is a pretty cool adaptation for an injured WD. Cool pic too.

I have two and they never burrow, they always climb. I think that they like to like to climb because in their natural habitat, in Vietnam, they hang out in trees above the water. If they sense a predator they drop from the limbs and swim away. If they cant climb, like yours, I think they might do the next best thing and burrow so they have a place to escape to when afraid or threatened. Also I think that Aussie water dragons burrow.

just read your message, any chance spike may be female? the burrowing you dscribed sounds like the typical behaviour of a female getting ready to lay eggs, just a thought : )
ps. if this is the case i'd let spike do all the burrowing she (he!) likes!

I did not even think about "spike" being a female. My female burrowed when she laid eggs too!

spike does seem to have hemipenal bulges and also i was told that males have much larger crests and throats than females, spike has both. Thanks for the input guys,it has helped me understand him a littlw better!Im thinking about getting him aa partner so just i breed most of what i keep with the exception of my nile monitor, but thats for obvious reasons.
see yah and thanx again
