Gestation questions...

senorsnake Jul 11, 2007 09:46 PM

I've heard they'll drop anywhere from 3 to 5 months, I was hoping some of you would have more accurate estimates. I was planning a trip and then realized.. damn, aren't my rainbows due around that time? I doubt the petsitter would be happy or willing to clean up goo and get bitten by babies, so i'm reconsidering the trip. Just wanted to know a more accurate time frame to make sure i'm not passing up a cruise for nothing.

Long time no post huh I believe Jeff states that gestation is somewhere around 5-5.5 months and Mike has this theory that it might be about 105-110 days after post ovulation shed so if you recorded your shed that may very well help you plan your vacation. Hope this helps you

Well, Gobball and Tofu stopped all action around April 25th, and Gobball and Larva quit around May 5th.

Vacation would be during the tail end of August.

5 months would put them both mid-september, but I'm not sure if its worth risking it incase they go sooner. What does everyone think? Too close to call?

Semi off topic, Larva doesn't look very gravid.. so not expecting much if anything for her.. but shes thermoregulating. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Larva looks good, though.

LOL, is it just me.....

April 25th and May 5th would be 04/25 and 05/25

add 5 months and you have 09/25 and 10/05

add 5 1/2 months and you have 10/10 and 10/20

So due dates from that method would place due date from late September to Mid October.

Late august vacation should be fine and FYI, I've come home from vacation to find babies cruising the cage. As long as it's secure enough so the little ones can't escape, they'll be fine.

And maybe Larva just has a smallish litter?

My 5 to 5.5 months after last observed mating timetable works pretty good for me. The only problem is that when I am not watching them close enough they may be mating a week or two after the last time I see them mate and so the litters are spread between the 5 and 5.5 month times. If you saw them mating late april and early may your august Bahamas vacation should work fine. Where you going in the Bahamas?
Jeff

Thanks for the input. Can't wait to have babies around, and would hate to miss out on them being born. First rainbows, you know.

We'll be in Freeport and Nassau, part of a cruise, so only a day in Freeport, and 2 in Nassau. Never been, should be fun.

When she's damn good and ready, not one day sooner.

Sorry we are working towards collecting data and there is speculation it's similar to boas (POS plus 105ish days) but the data si simply not conclusive. There will be a LOT more data cpollected this season and may be able to point to something. Only time will tell.

I believe Jeff says 5 to 5 1/2 months are last mating.

5 months or so from last mating is fairly accurate. I have also found babies tend to arrive 4.5 months from last food refusal. This date roughly correlates with 110 days from post-ovulatory shed. Using these three cues, you should be able to predict about when your babies will arrive. Best of luck with them. We're all counting the days now,
