Is this a HALLOWEEN Morph?

vidusa Jul 12, 2007 08:33 AM

I received this hatchling that is unusual from the rest. It was farm ranched, but this one has pink-salmon color on the lower 1/3 of its body. When I looked up morphs, it seem closest to halloween.

Please, your thoughts

That's as normal as they come. It's a hatchling. The color will change as it ages.

Considering all morphs came from wild-stock, or wild-type, what is best to do, wait until its an adult to see if the color changes (for better or worst)? How does one see a co-dominance or a recessive trait in a "out-of-africa" baby? I've seen some halloweens and they don't look much different from the one I pictured. If they are different, please explain.

I don't know what a "Halloween" ball is. It's not an established genetic mutation. It's just someone who got a ball from Africa and called it Halloween because it had some orange on it. There is nothing to wait for. Balls commonly have orange on them. Just because it has an orange coloration, doesn't make it unique. And as it ages, that orange will turn brown and you're left with a completely common looking ball python that could be found in any pet store. Sorry if you thought you had something different. Because balls are SO variable, it leaves the door wide open for outright liars to manipulate less experienced buyers into paying more for absolutely no reason. Or for people who are a little overzealous to talk themselves into believing they are on to something. Do a lot of research, read and compare many pics. Eventually you'll be able to spot what's real and what's just hype. There's way more hype than there is truth. That applies everywhere, not just ball pythons.

Thanks for your response. I was planning to market it, but I did not want to sell it as something it is not. That is why I was seeking the forum's opinion first. If anyone thinks it is unique, please post your opinion. Meanwhile, I will go along with the general consensus that all three are normals.

Thanks

To market anything as other than normal it has to be proven out by breeding to see if the trait holds true first. With young this takes years to do. It's a time consuming hobby. If you believe they are something unique, raise them up and breed them and see what you wind up with, but don't try to sell them as something they aren't. With these it will most likely be just more normals.

I never tried to sell the snake. Thats the point. I asked the forum, "Is this normal or not? I want your opinion." Now I get attacked for selling things for what they are not. I have not tried to sell it. The opposite. I don't want to sell something that it is not. That is why I posted this question. I wanted experienced opinions. I wanted to know if what I have is different or just a pretty wild-type ball python. I did not want to mislead. I did not want to try to market a wild-type as a halloween. If that is what I wanted to do, I would have done it without asking for your (the forums) input. Some fool would have purchased it. I am honest with my reptiles and do not want to misrepresent what I sell. I held it back to make sure I sell it for what it is. If I am unsure, I am not afraid to ask. I just did not expect to get attacked for asking. This experience gives me the incentive not to ask next time. This forum only gave competitors or others the opportunity lobby unfounded acusations at me. Why should I ask a question ever again?

There might be several people calling their orange snakes Halloweens. This is a CH female that I got from Vin Russo, who thinks she is the same type of animal he has on his site, listed as Halloweens. For the original poster, you can see how orange she looked as a baby, but really got a high gold or yellow color, and lost alot of the actual orange.
