Thursday Pics? . . . . .

BRB_Russ Jul 12, 2007 09:02 AM

So of course since i got my Guyana out for pics i also got my rainbow out. I was looking at some old pics and damn he is getting so much bigger! He is kinda dark though he hasnt been turning very orange or red much like i see others but i suppose he is still pretty young.

Also, ya ever noticed how older Rainbows look glossy and smooth? and the young ones kinda look rough and have more of a satin type finish? my CRB is glossy and my BRB is not glossy, but ive noticed that the older BRBs i see arround are glossy . . i wonder when they start to get glossy/shiny like that. . .

Anyway here are the pics

Seeing things from his point of view!

Nice pix,

IMO that glossy appearance you describe has more to do with hydration than age. A BRB that hangs out in a nice damp location (moss hide box) will have that glossy look while one kept drier will not.

I find that hard to believe as my BRB soaks 3 days out of a week and constantly has >70% humidity and he has never gotten that glossy appearence.

and my CRB has allways had it (since ive had him) and when i got him he was at a petstore with a tiny water boal and was never misted . . . .

Could be two factors working towards/against the same results. Aging where the scales fill out and hydration which lack of can shrink/wrinkle or otherwise reduce the sheen.

Here's a series of pix of Amber from birth to present.

This was the first pic I have showing Amber on 08/26/2005, not very clear but you can see Savannah around the water bowl and many of her babies crawling around. Amber is the one on the right side down on the newspaper.

Pic #2 shows Amber much clearer, you can really see her lack of crescents

A cropped closeup of just her from pic 2

When I was putting the individual babies into their own tubs, I saw her and thought "wow, what do we have here?" I had to take a couple of pics right away. You can see she still has her umbilical. Of course I gave her card number 1 from her litter - SA-PO-01

Now it's 09/30/2005, right after her second shed and the blush in her side medalions is starting to show.

11/13/2005 Almost three months old, a week and half after third shed.

12/20/2005, outside in my cherry tree in natural light, WOW, this girl is starting to really glow. BTW, she shed just before these pics were taken.

Another pic on 12/20, inside under incandescent lighting

Two more pics on 12/20, outside again on the sidewalk one showing each side

Two pics from 06/01/2006, new pics for the website launch

07/11/2006, I took this pic with Amber, two Hypo's Dottie is more orange and Mickey is mostly toward the right, towards the left is Hook, one of my bullseyes, in the middle is Amber and toewards the right is Rose. I love this shot as it shows a LOT of variety in colors/patterns.

07/11 again, just Amber

09/04/2006, now just over a year old

11/03/2006, not a great pic but still a great subject

These four pics are from 01/12/2006. She was definately a great choice for holding back.

I think your right, as they age they get that nice glossy shine, but at any age a lack of moisture will cause them to look rough and dull.

Russ,
..They have some natural oil in their skins. If they spend a lot of time soaking in a water bowl they wash the oil out and do not look as glossy as one that has nice high humidity but does not soak in the water too much. This may go along with what you notice about bigger ones being glossier than little ones. The little ones use all the fat in their meals for growth whereas larger ones may have some excess oily fat from their meals to spare and keep their skins slightly oilier. Just ideas here.
