At a year she should easily take a large mouse. Try that every 5 to 6 days .

pheonix Jul 12, 2007 01:42 PM

i'm by far not an expert but i have 2 balls that are about a year old and they'll take 2 full size mice every 7-10 days...

jimmyeo3 Jul 12, 2007 01:44 PM

Balls can eat meals a little larger than the size of the largest part around of their bodies. When they eat you should be able to tell that they have eaten.

Robotchicken Jul 12, 2007 02:35 PM

i had no idea i was feeding her the wrong size...lol, ill get some small mice next time i go to get food...thanks!

If you get your ball what you said, you would still be underfeeding it. Everyone who responded to your original post mentioned (and I agree) that you should be feeding your ball ADULT (that's large) mice or appropriately-sized rats.

i feel like an idiot now...guess my atb got me confused :/

Robotchicken Jul 13, 2007 12:29 PM

well i fed her a adult mouse as soon as i got home, she ate it no problem...thanks for the tip guys!

JaredHorenstein Jul 12, 2007 01:42 PM

Lol.........seriously though.....

Dont rush it.......let it grow aty a normal pace. Try feeding it med mice...you would be quite surpised that it will eat it. The meal shoudl be the same as the girth of the snake at the thickest part of the body.

At a year old and 21 inches she could likely power down a small rat or several adult mice once a week. Gradually increase the size of her prey to match her girth.

Good luck!

Who else laughed at this....?

"im no herp noob.......im feeding her 2 fuzzies a week...."

....hhhmmmm....

melindaste Jul 12, 2007 02:28 PM

Keep it nice. At least he asked..

ginebig Jul 12, 2007 02:38 PM

Rule of thumb is, prey item as thick as the thickest part of their body. Now, whether you are aware or not, that snake is built to take something the size of a small rat at that size. Their jaws stretch enough to take in something three times, or more, the size of their head. No, I'm not saying you should try it. That could be harmful to the young'n, and simply not to bright .

As others have said, something a tad larger than the thickness is OK. A small bulge won't hurt, just fill it up a bit .

JMHO

Melinda...maybe its just my few years of working in the retail reptile business but I've seen those comments too many times not to laugh at them anymore. I don't think my comments were "too" mean, if anything it opens the eyes of those that think they have a handle on the reptile world, and should realized they have alot yet to learn as we all do!

You can't tell me that wasn't at least a little funny!

melindaste Jul 12, 2007 03:10 PM

I know what you mean. I think alot of the "questions" on here would stop if caresheet for Ball pythons was a sticky right at the top. So when someone comes here they can go to the care sheet first if they do not find what they are looking for then ask questions. Not alot of people take the time to search for the caresheets. I know you were not trying to be mean. I have been on here for almost two years and it is pretty much the same questions over and over again.

J35J Jul 12, 2007 06:33 PM

I hear ya, I've been coming to this forum for 4 years, I just don't normally post much. I heard alot of the same questions everyday when I managed this small pet store through college. We specialized in reptiles and the things you would hear people say through the 5 years I worked there was amazing. Too bad I had to graduate college and get a "real" job. I miss that place!

There is no reason why you would want your BP to grow faster.

Just feed your BP the appropriated size prey once a week and let it grow at his own pace.

The most important it to have a healthy thriving BP, so just be patient.
