Well it's almost that time of year again

Daytona is just around the corner. Who's going? (FR??? - you got it in ya?). I'm organizing a monitor group discussion for the Friday night. Except instead of an entry fee, you have to do 3 shots at the door to get in. Come on, who's going?

Partying with fellow herp enthusiasts amidst Hurricane Floyd's onslaught was a blast, and a memory of mine which I'll never forget. I say bring on another hurricane!! (as long as my flight is able to make it down to Florida before it hits!).

Although I don't attend the convention to buy any animals, I have been extremely disappointed the past couple of years, given the prevalence and 'domination' of ball python morphs (and other "morphs". It was crazy to see how cut-throat the Ball Python vendors were. Vendors selling the exact same animals, but were set up in adjacent and opposite booths.

Just the general trend demonstrated by these larger-scale conventions, is that normal looking 'wild-type' animals have lost their appeal among many hobbyists and enthusiasts.

I think that the most impressive vendor the past couple of years has been the Hydrosaurus breeder, but then again, any vendor who isn't "Specializing in the finest morphs" is a nice sight for sore eyes.

I feel the same way about that. It's the sad reality side of the reptile "business". My biggest issue is the ''regular'' animals are sold way too inexpensively as a result of these flavor of the month animals. Then some kid impulse buys the animal only to have it perish within months of purchase. I say hold your ground and still charge $50+ for V. exanthematicus (or, "perish the thought" somebody start breeding the dang things) because it will cull the impulse buyers out some. When they are peddled for $10 or less and brought in by the lot, so many perish. So, It isn't necessarily the morphs themselves, but the cheapening of the normal animals to a 'disposable' level that urks me so much. I think I ranted on this forum about this a few months ago. Can't remember.
