breeder question.

captotterboy Jul 12, 2007 06:29 PM

I have a cali kingsnake possibly a jungle. I want to breed her eventually. Here is a pic. What kind of male should i get to make some good babies? I have never bred snakes before, but i have bred geckos, so i have some of the basics down, but i am a little lost with snake genetics.

thanks

I don't think that is a jungle, it looks "pure" cal king - but anyway, it is aberrant and therefore extremely difficult to predict what babies might look like.

What about in terms of maximizing profit from any potential babies? For example, is there a male i can get who's babies with my current female will be more expensive than another male? If so, which ones? If not, should i just try to get a male whos pattern i like so the babies have either their mother's or their father's pattern? What happens with mixing patters?

Thanks alot,
Jeff

One more,
What about the rumers that it is possible to breed kings milks and corn together? I understand that it might be difficult with a corn and king because of the tendency of the latter to eat the former. Can it still be done? How? positives and negatives?

Thanks,
Jeff

Yes - you can hybridize cal kings with milks, corns, etc. - I have no idea how hard it is as I've never tried. Apparently there are some tricks to increase the odds of a succesful copulation.

My understanding is that with corn snake X cal king, it is easier to use a female cal king and a male corn because of the shape of the reproductive organ.

There is a hybrid forum here where you can probably get some more information on it.

Maximizing profit with cal kings is difficult.
If you want to do it, the best thing is to get a pair of something unique rather look for a mate for an existing animal.

Cal Kings like the one you have go for ~ $25 at shows.
