Rack is completed (...for now)

molonowski2 Jul 12, 2007 09:45 PM

First off I would like to say thank you for the advice that was given to me earlier. I have completed my rack (minus the heat for the time being). Total cost was about $160, could have been less but i purchased more wood than i needed. I would really have liked to make it taller but I was limited by my door opening and this just squeezed in.

It holds 6 tubs total, each tub is about 16" x 26" x 6". Heat hasn't been put in yet b/c I live on the third floor and the temps in snake room will not be be below 80deg anytime soon.At any rate here are some pics.

Stain came a little darker than I was shooting for but that's not an exact science (for me at least).

Front View

The space came very close to what I was hoping for, should be escape proof or so I hope

Hollow core doors I think. It looks good to me.

Hollow core door racks are nice but can be problamatic getting in and out of the room you want them in. Duh, take a door and add more doors to it making it into a box and then try to get it through the doorway. I believe most doors are 30" with some (closets and bathrooms) being only 28". If your tubs allow it, go with the smaller 28" doors for your rack which will go through a 30" opening. That way you could make the rack much larger as long as one dimension (height or width) is less then the doorway height.

I've heard many stories over the years of folks making various racks and cages only to get into a "jam" when trying to get them into the room. I try to always factor that in and make at least one dimension less than or equal to 28". More typically around 24".

For example, this rack is 40" deep, 21 1/2" wide and 75" tall. Just short enough to roll through a doorway.
