Pet frog for b-day?

bloodycats May 21, 2003 08:51 PM

I have a friend turning 23 on Saturday, and she has in the past expressed interest in having a frog as a pet. She likes my snakes, and would want one but can not get over the frozen mouse thing. How are frogs to keep as pets? What is the best for a beginner? I know amphibiands in general don't tolerate handling well, but that is OK-- I am sure she will treat the animal with respect. Are frogs OK beginner animals, or should I be looking into a bearded dragon instead?

Hi.Yes frogs are not a handling animal.I would suggest a firebelly toad, they are very easy to take care of and very nice looking too. I also have a corn snake, tell her to just buck it up with the frozen thing because having a snake is soooo cool .I LOVE mine and can't wait to get a new baby this year .

If your friend is looking for a pet that tolerates handling and will respond well to human interaction go for the bearded dragon. If she is looking for an animal to watch and learn from go for the frog. I wouldn't recomend buying a frog as a gift, this is how a lot of reptile neglect cases start. You might instead buy them a gift certificate to a pet store or some basic parts of a frog setup to get them started. Good first frogs are fire-bellied toads, horned frogs (pac-man frogs), whites tree frogs and green tree frogs. Do some research online and find out what your friend is interested in. Good luck!

It should be up to the person who will be taking care of the animal for the next 10-20yrs to decide what they get. The gift certificate is the best idea.

Maybe you could go to a petstore with your friend and just "look" around.you should be able to strike up a casual conversation about frogs and watch which ones she likes the best.
Just make sure that she REALLY does want one.I love iguanas and always talk about what neat pets they are but I wouldn't want the responsability of owning one.
I would say that green tree frogs or squirrle tree frogs would be a good first pet frog.I got a pac-man for my birthday, but I got to go to the pet store and pick out what I wanted. He is kinda a boring pet but I still love him even though all I usually see is his eyes sticking out of the bed a beast.
