Colombian breeding?

JenHarrison Jul 13, 2007 02:45 AM

I have a pair of Colombian rainbows and while I would like to breed them, I can't find specific info on weight. I've found sites with how-to's on temps, multiple males, ages, lengths, etc...but nothing on weight. My male is 4 years old, about 5 1/2 feet long, and 1857g. My female is 5 years old, 4 feet long, and 1089g. I just picked the girl up and she's eating GREAT on weaned rats (her previous owner only offered mice every couple weeks). I'm assuming the male is probably OK to go, but how big (weight/length) does the female need to be to safely breed and successfully carry/deliver healthy babies without taxing herself too much?

Hi Jen, welcome to the forum! How did your rescue pick-up go?

I don't know a whole lot about the Colombians, but if they are anything like Brazilians the female should put on a bit more weight. Check out Jeff Clark's website, it's full of good information on Rainbows:

www.corallus.com/cenchria/index.html

1089 grams is about 2.4 pounds, and Jeff suggests 3-3.5 pounds to be a good weight for a female Brazilian to start breeding. I'm guessing that the Colombians would have similar requirements.

I'm sure others will have much better information for you, but I thought I'd just give you something to start with.

Hey Aubrey! Thanks for the link, that's definitely a good start.

The rescue went well...the people were nice, they just had no idea what they were doing. The ball pythons weren't exactly housed the best (all 3 in one 36" x 23" Vision cage with nasty water and dirty substrate)...and all 3 are REALLY skinny. 5 years old and 600-700g each. They're going to take quite a bit of time to get them healthy again -- luckily they're all sweet and handleable. One is very pretty, he has some neat flames and a gleaming white belly. So far it looks I have homes lined up for them, I just want to get them up to proper weight before letting them be adopted though. Poor things.

Glad to hear everything went well. Those are some lucky snakes to get out of a situation like that, and have future homes already lined up... what more could they ask for!

I know you're a busy gal, but I hope you decide to stick around. This is a very friendly forum, and can get very sarcastic at times but it's all in good fun. I know Scott (coluberking25) would love to have another fellow CRB owner on this forum... lol!

Jen,
....I have bred female Colombian Rainbows that were only a little over 4 feet and 2.5 pounds. Yours should be able to grow a couple inches and gain another 500 grams before the end of the year and be more than big enough. I used to think Colombian Rainbows were super easy to breed then mine quit breeding when I wasn't paying attention for a couple years and I have not been able to get them to breed since. They have been here so long that they may be approaching too old an age to successfully breed.
Good luck and welcome to the forum,
Jeff

Thanks! I really enjoy these guys, they're so docile and pretty -- albeit active and curious when they're out of their tubs.

Also, what do you house yours in as adults?
