Bad Night....

medyssa Jul 13, 2007 02:56 AM

So I finally got around to checking on the snakes today and feeding.
I am still really upset about all of this and stressed too, I'm just going to list it, and hopefully feel a little less hopeless when I have reviewed...I doubt it though.
1. My last baby from Cleo's litter I found dead in his cage. I dont know why.
2. Dudette bit me I have a nice hole in my thumb.
3. Cleo managed to grab the tongs I use to feed the stupid dead rats to the currently frustrating snakes and managed to start swallowing the rat with the tongs over her head, but managed to THANKFULLY wiggle her way out AND keep dinner down.
4. Noah bit me. No surprise there.
5. Zeek spilled his water.
6. Dude spilled HIS water.
7. All my cages are smelling moldy if not actively growing shrooms.

And everything seemed fine this morning!
Ugh!
I'm going to go to bed now, and cry, and then wake up and bury my poor little Mad Hatter and then finish cleaning and tending to my little imps. Hopefully I will have my wits restored when everything starts smelling better.

Jess, I'm sorry to hear you've had a rough night. Losing an animal is never fun, especially when it is one of your babies. I hope all of your snakes calm down, and that you feel better soon. Perhaps some ice cream is in order?

Jess,
..We learn from our mistakes. And I am an especially slow learner so I have made more mistakes and killed more snakes along the way than most anyone else. We used to kill a lot of snakes because we did not know some of the seemingly simpler things we know today. I see two clues in your post. All the cages are smelling moldy and normally calm snakes are doing odd things. I wonder exactly what is causing the moldy smell and if it might be more than mold? Perhaps some microscopic things are growing and producing noxious fumes that killed the smaller snake and are irritating the larger ones? a Little amonia gas coming off a biochemical reaction could cause respiratory problems. Look at everything and I am sure you can come up with better ideas to investigate than mine.
Jeff

Well I am going to bury the little Hatter today and get my stupid cages cleaned and look for new cages. Because of all the adults spilling water in the wooden tower cage (similar to Daves breeding setup without the tubes) the wood is warping and getting really funky between the heat in the cages and the constant availablity of at least one bowl of spilled water.
Its about time for new cages I think. Fortunately I have some money saved up.
Today is better. Thank goodness.

Wooden cages can be problematic. Both of my sets have full formica floors and one even has all the walls and ceiling formica'd as well. That and a good bead of caulk and I don't have any problems with moisture penetrating the cages. Also, those huge water bowls I use are hard for the snakes to tip and spill so almost never have spilled water, just urates.
