A Co2 kill box?

I dont have any plans, but figured I'd jump in and help clarify what you meant.

>>yep i need to make one for if i get live rabbit from time to time.

Ok now I know what you are talking about.

I used a latching rubermaid tote with a hole drilled in the side it was crude but worked great.

I plumbed a 30pd CO2 bottle directly into the plubing, even had gauges, all I did was fill the tote, latch the lid, and flip on the gas, in 10 minutes I had 30 gased rats.

I have pictures but I don't want to upload them if interested send me a PM and I'll email them to you as well as any questions you may have.

Anything short works great for rodents although you may need a taller tote for rabbits same concept.

Best of Luck

Seriously? 10 mins. Wow. I'd much rather just swing the rats by the tail and knock 'em silly. I hope they dont take that long, that's just an arbitrary number you used.

Is there not a carbon MONOxide machine? LOL I'd hate to suffocate for any longer than 30 seconds.

>>Seriously? 10 mins. Wow. I'd much rather just swing the rats by the tail and knock 'em silly. I hope they dont take that long, that's just an arbitrary number you used.

You would be suprised how long it takes to sufficate. It takes only a minute to fill the chamber, but 5-10 mins isn't unusually for them to sufficate. Believe it or not I've had them come back to life!

CO2 isn't poisonous so there is no danger to the pedetory animal it mearly inhibits the prey to breath Oxygen during the gas chamber period. Carbon Monoxide actually binds to the aveoli of the lugs inhibiting their ability to absorb oxygen. Weather or not ingesting them is a good thing or not is not my call.

I used to knock out the rats but its a slow process to beat 30 rats to death. Not to mention it starts the rigomortis, due to the adrenoline relaeased upon impact. With CO2 gas there is no rigomortise, its limp and tender. I used to feed picky eaters that would take live or F/T fresh killed because they were warm and limp enough to manipulate like a live rat. Its pretty weird using tongs to make a dead limp rat walk like its alive. Plus ther is no blood!

Another factor is after removing the rats from the chamber their about 10 degrees warmer because they were hypervenalating which causes increased blood flow. Makes them perfect for feeding fresh.

Cheers

Here's some pics of the one I made. I don't have a specific set of instructions on how to build it, though. There should be enough info to at least get you a good start.

Have a good one!

Similiar to what I use but he liked yours better. At least yours is a good pictorial. In the end I think my method is cheaper, LOL.

By the way Mike you link at the bottom of the page creates a loop its not a true link, I don't no if that was intentional or a typo.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the "Heads up!" on the link. I goofed & had it set in relation to site folder instead of document. It's fixed now.

Mine won't be winning any science fairs and I definitely could've/should've done it cheaper. Not knowing what I was getting into I went overboard for the sake of peace of mind.

I think I've got right about $100 in it but I think it can be built for about $60 - $70.

Catch ya later!

Mine cost me 70 something cents as I had everything laying around, just had to buy a barb fitting. Everything else well.... you would be suprised as to what people throw out!

It costs me $43-$45 a year to run. Fortunatly I stopped breeding rats, but ther was a time I was killing 200 rats a month.

You're welcome!

I fixed the broken link at the bottom of the page. You might come up with some better ideas after seeing how they did it.

Take care!
