guinea pig cage

pig Jul 14, 2007 12:28 AM

I would like to get one or two leos soon, and I'm wondering if I could use a guinea pig cage to house them. It is just sitting there going to waste after all... Poor cage

It's 26x16x11" making it around 20 gallons. It's made of that hard plastic material, so my only real concern is whether I'd have a problem with a heating pad. I've never used a UTH with anything plastic, so just a confirmation that it won't burn down would be lovely. It also has a lid that I could stretch some netting over.

Here it is pictured from the front and top.

it looks like it would be fine. It's only a guinea pig cage because the manufactuers labeled it as one, ya' know? If the heating pad isn't too large, then it shouldn't be a problem. Stick so one made for a 5-10 gallon, even if you have to use more than one. I've had the ones made for 55 gallons burn holes in plastic tubs, so I definately would not use something with that high of wattage, but I've used smaller ones on my plastic "kritter keepers" and they aren't a problem. You could also try a heat-cord. Use electrical tape to secure it under a portion of the cage. It's nifty because you can put it exactly where you want, and a lot of people use it with plastic tubs in racks without any problems.
