if you have seen the vet already (sounds like you have) all i can really say is stay the course and hopefully the little guy/gal can pull out of it with your help.... to help wash out the mouth I'd take food syringe with a small opening and maybe flush out with a saline solution? if this doesnt conflict with anything else you are doing for it.
really sucks that there are people out there that can really take care of animals like this. .
