Hamster for food?

savana_man May 21, 2003 08:55 PM

I'm looking at my sisters hamster running in his little ball and I was wondering if I could get another one so they could have babies and feed those to my sav?

One mammal is just as good as another. I would rather feed hamsters to reptiles then mice and rats. Mice and rats are usually very tame, and they are pretty intelligent. In general, hamsters are stupid nasty little [bleep]ers that bite every chance they get. I have to deal with them every day at the pet shop i work in. When one of them gets too agressive, it gets fed off to any hungry snake nearby.

Yeah, you can feed hamsters, mice, rats, insects, basically whatever the heck you want. a hamster offers a good whole food with lots of nutrients. andrew, varanuscreations.com.

ps, why don't you just breed mice or rats? they are much easier. of course breeding anything is easy, just takes work.

Well I thought aout that and my mom dosen't like the idea of rats in the house. So she mentioned my sister wanted to get another hamster, so I talked to my sister about letting me have the babies and she said sure. But possibly this summer I will start with rats.

Your mom lets you have a nasty hamster in the house, but not a rat??
(Rats rule!)

You could breed mice. They grow and breed a lot faster than rats. They are tremendously entertaining on the wheel, unlike rats. They need less space. You can have fun breeding for different colors. And when the little bast*rds slaughter their mate or babies just because it got upset over something, you will not feel as bad feeding off the killers to your animals. They are not like cuddly, loving rats. Mice are food. They even smell like cornchips. D.

Hamsters tend not to be very good for breeding as feeders. They have 1 or 2 pups on average, and that's it. So do not plan on using hamsters as a constant food source because with only one pair you'll never have enough. Gerbils are the same way except they have 3-5 pups. Mice have more, but mice are nasty little buggers. Rats do well, and they're usually "friendly" (I even kept some non-breeder mice with my rats at one time and the rats did not mind the mice).
