Breeding small females...

JP Jul 14, 2007 02:06 PM

A common discussion thread revolves around the "is my female big enough to breed" issue. Just for infromation purposes, I thought I would share some data.

I had two 2 year old girls that I was hoping to breed this year. The were both in the 1350-1400 gram range at the end of last November when I start cooling and breeding (they were both quite thick, not too skinny). After much debate, I decided to go ahead and give them a shot, as I am trying to prove out a project that I have been waiting on for some time.

Anyway, both bred repeatedly, both took 1 rat after the spring warm up, and both laid 3 egg clucthes. One was 3 @ 335 grams, and one was 3 @ 299 grams. We'll see how they do next year.

My female was 1500 grams and she laid 5 eggs weighing about 450 grams, the hatchlings were between 45-50 grams when hatched.
