Any idea on species? (pic)

snakeguy88 Aug 18, 2003 05:56 PM

got mixed answers...some said "blood corn" and some said glades rat or glades/yellow mix. I do not know anything about it other than I received it as an "african rat" which I highly doubt it is. 4-4.5 ft long, male. I am posting on the corn forum too. Thanks for any help! Andy

Plain belly, and the head isn't shaped like an obsoleta's, plus it looks like it has a fleck or two of black barring on the lips, which is very corn-y. I went through this about 3 years ago when I bought a male striped corn marked as a ratsnake, and wanted to differentiate between corns and rats, just to be sure that I had correctly identified my striper

OK. I've been trying to stay out of this but my doubts are making me speak up. Those gaps in the scales and the scale shape on the back end of that snake don't look "Rat Snake" to me. Granted, that's a fat snake, which would explain the skin showing but not the scale shape.
The head scalation looks a little off too. The eyes aren't quite right for a mole snake- though they come in reddish brown too. I can't find an image of a mole snake showing the belly scales.
Doesn't look like an African House Snake- though they would be Africa's version of the North American Corn Snake. Their bellies are pure white. HMMM...
It's probably just a hypo, blood red het for something patternless corn snake. Looks nice though.

Yea...it has been eating LARGE rats...which is a bit extreme (this snake is like...4-4.5 ft long). It's def. got to be a rat snake of some sort whether that be corn or obsoleta morph. Def. not a house snake from what I have seen though. I might just take him to the herp shop tomorrow...Andy

I have been looking and looking at that snake and my first impulse was glades rat but the more I looked at it, especially the belly, I would have to go with corn also. Bloodred seems likely. Very nice snake!!!

And was assured it was a corn of some sort...bloodred most likely (though I guess with corns it could have anything else mixed in). If I can get its weight down a little, it might be a good snake lol. Andy
