Breeding boas

metalpest Jul 14, 2007 06:08 PM

Anybody have any advice for me? I cooled them to the upper 70s in Dec, and introduced them in January. Courtship and copulation took place until the end of Feb, when she entered shed. In March, they no longer had an interest in each other, and she is not gravid. I'd like to fix whatever I did wrong so that I can have a nice healthy litter next year. I've read Rio Bravo's online page and the reptiles article by Jeff, is there any other info I can get a hold of?

Also, they are Honduran boas, if that makes any difference.

....They just don't take. Try them again next season and hope for the best. If they were breeding a copulating that is all you can ask for. That means the male senses that the female is ready and the female is receptive enough to allow him to copulate. Not only in boas does the same result occour. Even humans don't concieve every time there is intercourse. Better luck next season.

I wasn't sure that the male was big enough (2 yrs old) but I saw him spurring her and later I saw her tail lifting as soon as I put him in the cage. Not positive on copulation but I'm pretty sure they were locked up several times.

Since there was copulation and all, does that mean I did it right and should repeat this season? Thanks for the reply!

That's look pretty good to me! The only thing I might suggest would be to cool them down a bit more. With my CA pair, I usually let the temps drop down to the upper 60's/low 70's for NTL's and then warm them up to the upper 70's for DTH's for a few weeks. For the most part though, looks good! Hopefully we'll see some nice Hondos from you next season!
