rack melting, heat tape vs. uth, etc.

jcoler06 Jul 14, 2007 11:28 PM

Hey everyone...like the rest of you, Ive caught the "bug" and now my numbers are growing...and there are just TOO MANY FREAKING AQUARIUMS in my room!! I really like the racks in the classifieds...but I just think it would be smarter to build my own. ANY ideas on how to build it...would be awesome. I know alot say to use the 40something qt tubs....who thinks thats too small? Personally I havent seen them...other than the pics where they look kinda cramped for a big adult female. Also, whats the deal with heat tape? Everyone talks about how hard it is to wire...why not just use under tank heat mats from zoo med or the others? Will they melt the tubs? What would make heat tape any safer? Also, Ive ready everyone suggesting to use a thermostat along with heat tape and/or UTH's...I have uth's under all of my aquariums without any thermostats...and its been that way for litterally YEARS without any problems. What risks, if any am i taking in doing this? My temps stay right where I need them...and the snakes are doing great...so why all the fuss about the thermostats. If someone could just point me in the right direction....Im looking to buy/build a rack that will house 6 adult balls. Thanks to all, Jeremy

One time my heatmat was too hot to touch, I couldn't believe how hot it was... but for a whole year before it was always about 95. It only takes one time for it to overheat to cause a disaster so i decided to buy a stat. Luckily my corn would not let himself burn on that abnormally hot mat and he'd seeked refuge down the cold end, but if it had have been my ball he might have suffered some of the nasty injuries we see on this forum. Just a thought.
