Cham eating dirt???

Cham_Man Aug 18, 2003 08:21 PM

My veiled chameleon that is about 10-11 months pld has been going down to the dirt that 2 ficus trees are planted in and eating it. I replaced the dirt with regular ground dirt because the dirt was fertilizer. Has anyone else seen this happen? or what could i do to stop it. Thanks

Hi-

I have some pardalis who will eat dirt and dried leafs every once in a while. No one really knows for sure why, just that it could be because they do it for something lacking in there diet. I cover all my pots up with river rocks, that you can buy at homedepot. Make sure he doesn't get any fertilizer balls or it could kill him. Hope this helps!

It could be that your cham needs minerals. I've read that they think they might do that to get extra minerals they need, so try increasing his mineral supplements and see if that works. Just dust some of his food on an extra day to make sure he doesn't get too much, though and see if it helps.
