We've only had premie babies, and one 6-ft male die (DOA from shipping). The babies we tossed, and the male we sent back to the sender (at his request.. we're not sick or anything.) I imagine if one of our large 9ft or so snakes passed we would probably ask our vet to dispose of it for us. I suppose you could also do a home burial, if you were so inclined.

I had a large female BP die a while back. She was buried at home. I often wonder what people do with their large burms and retics though when one passes on. Can't imagine digging a whole for one of those or lugging that bad boy into the vet's office in a bed sheet! Not sure what they do.

Love the new arrival by the way. Got a real kick out that!

yeah i had a 6 ft burm die of IBD on me, my vet and I buried him together. (my vet is also my uncle) i was super bummed about poor sadayakko dying on me like that.

p.s. (totally off topic) i had the best DREAM last night, I had bought a carpet python, but it looked more like a hognose, anyway I put her in her new cage and let her be. I came back the next morning and she had given birth to a clutch of about 40 babies. but the great thing about the babies was that they were mostly baby gtp's and they all had their adult coloration and they were blues and yellows and reds and there were also some new rainbow morphs in the clutch and even a (what do you call those really ugly fat frogs is it dumpys?) and a few red-eyed tree frogs. best dream ever

RETF's aren't real hard Jasmine.. they need similar conditions to a brb actually

If you decide to get some, let me know and I will help you get setup for them.. I have kept and bred them for years and years.. The two most important things to remember w/ them are (1) get the tank set up and established before getting the frogs.. and (2) GET CAPTIVE BRED frogs.. imports are very very hard to keep alive. I saw a survey a few years ago that said over 75% of imported frogs from South America last less then 3 months.. I am not sure if it is that high or not, but certainly up there somewhere.

here is a baby sleeping for ya!

i am actually in the middle of the planning stage of making a fully computer controlled breeding rack for brbs kinda like dave's with the pbc on the sides but mine will be all vivariums and i will control the temperatures and humidity exactly via computer and a pid controller (I will program temperature curves that change as the year changes thus perfectly simulating their natural climate). it will be kinda like this, but this was my first drawing, so there are quite a few changes already to the design. i did a little research on retf's and i was thinking about making one of the cages for them. (cuz the conditions will already be perfect) anyway what do you think? the second picture is what will be visible. (i want it to look pretty)

how do you get a computer program to do that

atherisquamigera Jul 18, 2007 05:01 PM

we are going to hook the PID controller to a computer via an ethernet cable and then control it with a bash script that my boyfriend will write for me. (we use PID controllers to moniter and control our access points at our internet service provider) so when I told my boyfriend what i wanted to do he suggested we use the same idea for cage control. I wanted to do it this way so I could have temperature curves for night and day and different seasons, instead of just having heat wires that keep it the same temperature. I am doing this for fun so i am trying to make it as close to their natural environment as possible. and I also want to see if they will produce more eggs if they are caged in large vivariums with heat curves and regulated humidity etc. (we are dorks)

he owns an internet service provider and i am the tech support. (i have worked in the food service industry for 11 years (started when i was 7) and the restrant i was working at at the time closed (with a WEEK notice! in the middle of winter! it's impossible to find a job in a town of 600 in the middle of winter), so my boyfriend offered me a job as tech support, which is funny cuz i don't know anything about computers. everything i know to do my job now i learned in a few months. but it's fun cuz i spend all day on kingsnake. =)

Thanks,

"dumpies" isn't really short for anything.. just slang for whites tree frog. They are really cool frogs, and very easy to care for.. I don't have any pics of their tanks right now, but will try to get you some over the weekend..

Tim,
..Serious questions deserve serious answers. LOL. When I used to have big snakes die I would bury them in the back yard. When a smaller snake dies I freeze it in the rat freezer and put it in the garbage the day they come for pickup. I use black plastic bags out of respect for the dead and so the garbage men do not get upset.
