Wrinkly skin?

WTBowles Jul 18, 2007 03:13 PM

I just purchased my first BP about a week ago i didn't mess with him much for the first few days. as i started handling him i notice his skin wrinkles where he bends and feels almost detached. my friend purchased one the same day from the same store and his skin looks very tight and full. my snake has had two water dishes avalible (very clean) and i've even seen him drink which is why i didn't think it was dehidration. any ideas?

Has he eaten for you yet? If he's thin, that may be why he has loose skin. I wouldn't handle him at all yet. I know it's tough, but you should wait until he has eaten 3 or 4 times for you. What's his setup like (cage size, temps, substrate, heat source, ect)?

I think your right that he is a little under weight. I fed him a hopper for the first time last night and he attacked it without hesitation. this makes me think he may have skipped his last meal at the pet store. My friends BP that i discribed looked healther from the same store, wasn't interested in his mouse at all. i have him in a 30 gallon long, he has both an under tank heater and a lamp both on mid power with a dimmer, this maintains about 86F day and 80F at night. I have turf as a substrate with a little aspen shavings in the corner with his hide box. his humidity is holding around 65% (not hard to do in south east texas) with just a large water bowl. Please let me know if you see any problems with my set-up. I appriciate the advise and will feed him a few more times to see if he fills out before i get to concerned.

Thanks Again,
Wade

I'm glad to hear that he ate for you. He'll probably fill out pretty quickly. Your setup sounds pretty good. A 30gal is pretty big for a hatchling, though, so you may want to give him multiple hides so he'll feel more secure, and if he goes off feed you may need to put him in a smaller tank. Also, how are you measuring your temps? If you can keep them constant at 85-90 on the hot side day and night, that would be fine. He doesn't really need a night drop.

Hope this helps,
Shelly
