HELP ! This was in my back yard.

helponsnake Jul 18, 2007 08:11 PM

I have two small children and an fenced in back yard. I need to know about this snake. I think it was killed when we had the grass cut. We are located in St. Clair county , AL. Also any advice on keeping snakes out of the yard so that my little toddlers won't be near them. Thanks so much. I really appreciate it.

that definitely looks like a brownsnake to me. probably one of the most harmless animals on your property -- like the person above said they eat slugs and snails. additionally, they don't get large and i have never, NEVER, even heard of one striking at a human for any reason. completely harmless

There's probably absolutely nothing you can do to keep this type of snake out of you yard short paving it and putting up a concrete wall around the property, topped with a trough of flaming gasoline. Luckily, they are completely harmless (unless you're a slug).

Most of the snakes you have to worry about are attracted to rodents and hiding places. Keep as much clutter as possible out of your yard. That will cut down on both snakes and rodents.

Next, teach your children not to touch snakes without calling you first (so you can look them up, since most will be harmless).

Since it may not be obvious, you got two answers on the snake, Dekay's Snake and Brown Snake. Those are two common names for the same species of snake.
