Spider X Het Pied

PhillyBoyInTN Jul 18, 2007 11:29 PM

What kind of offspring could you expect from this pairing and what would be the percentage chance of getting each one? Thanks in advance!

if it is a 100% het pied you would get half spiders out the clutch with half the babies being het pied

So what is the likelihood that the het pied will have a visible effect on the spiders that get it and if so what will they look like? I know that the belly markers aren't a sure thing in "normal" possible het pieds but does adding the spider gene make the hets any more likely to stand out?

I was hoping there was at least some chance of making a spider piebald. I guess I still need lots of reading up on genetics.

You would need a spider het for pied and a het for pied. I think

TimS Jul 19, 2007 12:50 AM

you would need a spider 100% het piebald bred by a piebald or a 100% hetpiebald to get any spieds aka spider piebalds the spider het pied to a pied will give you ALOT better chance of the spider pieds

if you bred them already and your lucky enough to produce a spider male breed him back to mom.... you MIGHT be lucky enough to do it the next season or two.... 50% chance is better than none

Randy,

I know that Greg Graziani in the past has posted pictures of a few different het pieds (Pastel and Spider if I remember right...) that definitely showed a visible difference, thus in some settings, recessive traits can and will be expressed in heterozygous form(don't expect homozygous appearance, but usually an intermediate co-dom type appearance). Pretty cool stuff, and further reason to educate people into the difference of phenotype and genotype.

Btw, I verified the above info with my catalogue of pics, and indeed Graziani did produce a Pastel Het. Pied and Spider Het. Pied that definitely show a pied influence in the heterozygous Pied form w/ the influence of the pastel and spider genes. Not saying that every het pied that is also spider or pastel with exhibit this intermediate characteristic, but if anyone wants to see the pics email graziani, or send me a message and will email them to you.

Sorry, but the young won't show any definite "markers" to let you know that they carry the pied gene. All the young-both spiders and normal looking-would be 50% possible het pied.

If you have a 100% het pied by breeding it to a spider all your offsrings Spider and Normal would be considered 50% het Pied.

On the so call markers this is in no way conclusive some animal will exhibit the same markers being normal and some het do not have them.

Your best chances to obtain a spider pied are to breed a Male Pied to a female spider and keep of the female offsprings and raise them up to breed to their dad.

Or you can breed a male spider to a female pied and keep one male offsprings to breed back to his mom.
