Probing is the best way.
Males generally have longer tails that are fat after the vent, sometimes you can pop to prove a baby snake is male (it can't prove a snake a female, as popping female may just mean you did it wrong) - but probing really is the best way.

thanks and "popping?"

Popping a procedure that sometimes (depending upon skill of person doing it) causes the sex organ of a male to "pop" out of the vent.

It really only should be done on baby snakes - and it can damage the spine if done incorrectly.
