Best Odds so far

ssnakes Jul 19, 2007 10:21 AM

Pied clutch just hatched with the best odds so far. A het x het breeding with four Pieds and two hets.

One little guy has an eye problem that looks like a super eyecap over one eye. Has anyone ever encountered anything like this?

Wow that is a fantastic clutch. Not really sure about the super eye cap... perhaps a better picture would show us more clearly.

congrats on the odds. Those are some beautiful pieds. I've never seen an eye issue like that. Hopefully someone who has will speak up here...

Here is a close-up of the hatchling Pied with an eye concern.

Hello Susan,

Congrats on the great odds and pretty pieds. I wonder if that eye may have developed without a cap scale (spectacle). We have had this happen on Boa constrictor imperator a few times, particularly with homozygous Albino animals. It seems that they develop without a spectacle and gunk (absesses or infection) will form because the eye stays moist and cannot clean itself. I'm not sure if that is the case here, just worth noting since there seems to be a build up of debris around the eye. In most cases the animal will lose the eye but in all of our cases the animal has survived and fed normally with just a healed over "skin-like" growth around the eye.

You may want to seek veternarian advice if it seems to hae gotten infected.

Good luck with it...

Not sure about the eye but the hatchlings are VERY nice Susan!!!

ChristopherD Jul 19, 2007 11:23 AM

wonder if that high percentage changed the odds of the normals being het?????? Chris

rvareptiles Jul 19, 2007 11:37 AM

No, those normal looking offspring don't have any more than a 66% chance at being hets, regardless of how the rest of the clutch turns out.

Congrats on the odds! Those pieds are hot! One of my top 5 easy...

Deffinently some NICE looking Pieds there! Congrats on the clutch! As far as the eye problem, not sure, I can't really even see the eye behind it... Hopefully it'll come off with the first shed though!

Thanks to everyone for the congrats and nice comments. I think I am pretty lucky and glad you all agree!

Thanks Sean at EbN for the information on your eye problems with Boa Constrictor Imperator. That is most helpful and I believe that is what may be going on here. I think I will consult with the vet about it.

Hey Susan -

Can't tell from the pic for sure, but it looks like skin grew over the eye - a deformity perhaps. I would have to see it in person to be sure. You could bring it down here and leave it with me for a couple of years for observation. :P

Beautiful pieds!
