locale mixing

atherisquamigera Jul 19, 2007 02:57 PM

I was thinking and i want to start a fun project to see just how red i can breed a rainbow to be. (this year i am making the transition from strictly pet keeper to dabbling in breeding and i am starting to buy snakes solely for the purpose of making an end result snake) i am buying some peruvians and some brazilians and then i thought: "what if my two reddest snakes don't happen to be of the same locale?" I know they will breed together, but the question is, how easy would it be to sell the babies? If they are very red will it matter that they are mixed locals? Is my target market (rainbow keepers) a bunch of purists? (that's a good thing i am not making fun of you guys) I would sell the babies for a little less than average braz babies probably. how much do you think i should lower my cost to compensate for the lack of purity? or maybe the babies will just end up muddy... (haven't bred them yet i am just thinking ahead)

You're talking more than mixing local's although it may end up back there with redefinition of ssp's. Currently peruvian and brazilian are considered to be different ssp's, so crossing them would be classified as intergrade??

Either way, I'm not a purest but would most likely not be interested in them since really red BRB's are available. No value add in crossing them just to get red babies. Just my 0.02$

That's what I was thinking. I kept reading it over and over trying to figure out what he was talking about. Figured I was just dense.

Dave had a post up about waiting lists. I went to reply to it. When it went through, it somehow got attached to this this thread.
I went to look for it and the thread was gone. I guess it got deleated before my reply got attached. Sorry about that.

Jasmine,
...People are already crossing the two subspecies. Many of them offered for sale as Peruvians are actually Brazilians from northern Peru or are snakes that people have already crossed. If you get real Peruvians that have scale counts like they should you would be able to make better money keeping them pure. I think that if someone were to produce baby Peruvians and be able to prove that they were pure with the right scale counts they could ask a lot more for them than the snakes of unproven identity which people are now selling. We are far enough along with herp breeding to already see many animals that are virtually unidentifiable because of crossing. In a few decades our snakes that are pure may be extremely valuable for more than just monetary reasons.
