two females, 39.68, 59.53

Mrez Jul 19, 2007 05:01 PM

Hey all, I posted a few weeks ago about placing two females together. Well they have been together for about a week now and I haven;t noticed any nicks, scrapes etc. I'm curious about something though. The female that weighed in at 39.68 today just dropped two eggs last week. She was eating right afterwards but I didn;t get a weight on her. Since placing her with the other female I am not sure if she is eating regularly or not. I do plan on weighing her in a few days to double check and she certainly looks round and full right now .I've also been monitoring mealworms and they do seem to be going at a decent rate. My question is at what point does the dominance issue between the two girls end and at one point should I pull the small girl out and place her in her own ten gallon? They have been togethersince sunday in a twenty long. 2 hide spots on the warm side, two in the center of the tank and one large moist hide towards the cool end. There is a sinlge water dish and two small dishes for meal worms kept on the warm side by the warm hide logs.

Any and all thoughts would be appriciated.

My thought would be to carefully monitor both of their weights on a weekly basis, and if you see any negative weight trends, something probably needs to be done. A 20 long is definitely big enough for 2 geckos, so you should be ok there, and it sounds like you've got plenty of hides for them, so my main concern would be to watch them interact and make sure you don't see anything hostile, and if you're not seeing any injuries or weight loss, you're probably ok. If you see one of them get injured or start losing weight, I'd separate them immediately, but as long as you don't see anything funny going on and you can be sure they're both eating well, you're probably fine.

Personally I'd like their weights to be a bit closer together just to be on the safe side, but as long as you watch carefully and can quickly get the small one her own home if necessary, it'll probably be ok.

Sounds like you are doing fine. Just keep watching. Of course there will be weight fluctuations if they are laying, just make sure she bounces back fairly quickly. My only comment is that the humid hide really should be on the warm end.

if there is no male in the cage there usually isn't a "dominant female." even when places with a male females usually get along, its the males that don't.
