4th python specie, I had a retic at 11, arock at 13, and burm at 14, then a ball, kinda backwards. My first retic lived 14 years and was killed by a gargantuan female during breeding trials, but managed to sire 69 neonates out of 96 fertile eggs.
Female was my friends who had her when I was 11, she was 16 feet then, which is why I actually got one, man boy envy perhaps, It was easy I worked in a pet store from 11-15. I ordered it from either World Wide Reptiles or Bronx Reptiles way back in the day. My family considered me an "odd" lad, I also had speckled caimans at 13 when they where still legal in my state, now you can't have them anymore.
The female just recently passed and was 29 years old, give or take a year or two. other retic's I have been lucky enough to breed laid usually 30-35 large eggs, the other female laid small eggs and a pile of them to boot, only first clutch was that large, her other clutches averaged about 60 eggs, with one being 75, her last clutch in 2001 was 40 eggs, she didn't breed any more after that and died last year. My friend had to call me up to remove her, he was very upset to say the least. But we both have a few from our own line from wild caught retic's. Very few people kept them back in the 80's, I am happy to say I was one of them.
Basically after my divorce in 1996, my entire collection had to be disseminated including a 20 year old 25 foot Burmese python, het for old age lol. started rebuilding my collection in 2000/2001, so most of my snakes are just approaching breeding age. I slow grow all my snakes. I do not believe in making any snake breedable in under 3-4 years, typically they are almost 5 before I breed them for first time, my first retic was 14 the first and last time he bred. I managed to get 6 snakes from this bloodline, thank god, I was snake less except for a wild caught black racer from 1997-2000/2001. Although I have bred some snakes during the time. Retic's, Brazilians, and pine snakes and several rat snake species in 2001/2002. Sold them to get some of the stock I have now. It is nice to be back. Plus the alcoholism didn't help (2001-2006) I do everything backwards, didn't start drinking till I lost everything, then quit while rebuilding so I wouldn't end up like the typical story of loosing everything because of the drinking. ASS backwards lol.
