What is the best way to catch a Garter?

jimburke27 Jul 19, 2007 09:30 PM

I live in Central New York and want to catch an Eastern Garter Snake. I just have some questions:

What are the prime type of habitats to find an Eastern Garter?

Where do they like to hide while they are not out basking or looking for food?

Are there any things I can set up that will lure Eastern Garters to the trap (a harmless one)?

Are there any other suggestions you may have that could help me to find an Eastern Garter?

I would appreciate any helpful replies about this issue.

A trap is probably not the best thing--for cold blooded creatures that fall into it, even a "harmless" trap could subject them to temperature extremes. For garters the tried and true way is simply walking through prime habitat with your wits about you, ready to grab any garter stripes that you see. If you have access to country habitat, lay down some metal sheets and turn them over later--you are certain to see several critters. Wading into a shallow pond is also a good way--any garters you stir up are likely to jump into the water and actually come toward you.

I'm originally from Syracuse, which is somewhere close to you. When I was a kid, all you had to do was take a walk around the perimeter of the house and you would find them in the grass up against the house. In the springtime you could find them everyday!
