Herping for Harry Potter -Around Alpine

Eby Jul 20, 2007 06:06 PM

Like many teenagers, my 17yo daughter is a serious Harry Potter fanatic. So, to keep her happy, I've agreed to drive her to Alpine (53 mi) in time to get the newest Potter book when the store opens at 8am tomorrow (Sat). We had planned on leaving around 5am and herping the whole way, checking for a line, then herping some more if there wasn't one. Now it looks like Alpine is getting hammered with rain and will be in the low 60s in the wee hours.

I'm wondering if there might still be a chance at cruising a milk or anything else (other than 5,000 toads) in the wet and cold. Also, would it be worth taking a sort side trip after 8am for hogs or gophers? If so, where would be likely?

I'm a UPS man and I recieved "Harry Potter Security Training" So that I could properly deliver the books today. If you want Hogs, I would try 385 north of Marathon, we were finding them active at 10:30 at night in june.

Have a great trip

Try for hogs in the AM on the first 8-10 miles of 169 south of Marfa off 67. I spotted a large adult at 10AM crossing 67 on 7/15 about 4 miles south of the BP check-point the day after they mowed the shoulder.

Good luck.

Here in Dallas/Fort Worth I went to Walmart to pick up a copy. I got there at 10pm. I was number 2 in line, and they gave me a red band to keep around my wrist to guarantee me a copy. I also wanted an audio book, so they put that aside for me as well. (only 9 copies of audiobook). Then at midnight, the line was over 500 people long. It went out of the register where the line started, all the way down to the garden area, all the way back past the register where I was at, and all the way down to the bakery. (Walmart Superstore) I was glad I didn't have to wait through all of that. I am not too far in the book, and I will give SO SPOILERS. All that i can say is that it is very dark... Some kids will have a hard time with this.

Take Care,

Steven Owens

My daughter finished the book the day we bought it. She is a voracious reader and a HUGE Harry Potter fan. I have enjoyed the movies but haven't checked out the books yet. I'm more into Grisham novels and historical fiction (oxymoron?). My favorite books are "Not Between Brothers" by David Marion Wilkinson and the Aztec series by Gary Jennings.
