Snake Bites???

linda102565 May 21, 2003 09:19 PM

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum but have read some great articles... I'm new to ball python's and have had mine for about 2 months now. This is gonna sound like a dumb question, but read thru a lot trying to see if anyone else had asked this.

1. Do BP's actually have fangs?

2. If so, has anyone ever been bit by one?

3. How does it feel when they bite you?

Told you it was gonna sound dumb!!!
Thanks for any answers and I'll try to post a couple pics of my BP soon. Not sure whether its a he/she but, its a lil oner 36" and very gentle except for right now, getting ready to shed.

Ball pythons do not have fangs. They do however have a lot of sharpe teeth. If you should happen to get bit it will not hurt very much at all. One thing to remember if you get bit and your snake holds on do not pull it off. This can pull some of the snakes teeth out and can cause mouth rot. If that happens simply open the snakes mouth and remove it. Good luck with your new pet. Clay

A ball python bite is not very painful at all, and usually happens so quick you don't even have a chance to flinch. It is always a misunderstanding on the part of the human. They almost always realize as soon as they hit you that you are not a mouse, and let go immediately. If they don't, just stay calm and gently pry the snake's mouth open. Their teeth are sharp, but very small. And, no, they have no fangs, and no venom. Just clean the mark. I've never had one get infected.
It's really no big deal.

But I always thought snake bites hurt. Even small snakes. Ball pythons have a slower bite I think. My carpet python bite me the other morning, and they have a much faster bite. Not necesarilly harder, just ultra fast and piercing. I hate the feeling...its so weird. It doesnt hurt like I want to cry, just like Id rather not get bitten. But there right--it usually happens soo ultra fast you dont have a chance to get scared!

I know the post I'm responding too is a few days old but I do have one clarification to mek here...

A "fang" does not have to be hollow or grooved or used for venom delivery, it's simply an enlarged tooth with a curved shape used by predatory species for gripping or tearing prey.

Wolves have fangs... Bears have fangs... Cats have fangs... The canines in our own mouths are borderline. Ball pythons do have curved teeth (some of wich are longer than others within the animal's mouth) used for gripping prey and thus technically have "fangs."

Er... probably best to ignore the typos in the above post "too" should be "to" "mek" should be "make" and so on... my keyboard had an accident that has left it in less than prime operating condition.
