I paid 50 bucks for a styrofoam box with some wires in it................

fcwegnm0 Aug 19, 2003 12:44 AM

I was kind of, um, shocked, when I opened up my hova-bator and it was styrofoam.... I'm not sure what I expected but oh well, it'll do the job.

So I have a few questions... this is my first year breeding. There isn't any spot in my house less than 80 degrees... the temp in the incubator stays just above 80 without it turning on... I'm shooting for females so will that be fine?

If anyone has any tips for beginners I'd love to hear them... dave

Your house stays above 80? That would suck. What is the temperature in the fall and winter? I would wait until cooler weather arrived before I started incubating for females. If you don't want to wait, then find a closet or some other dark and cool place for your incubator. If you have a basement, that is even better.

The thermostat for my house is supposed to be 77-80ish, but my room stays at a constant 82 degrees, except if it really gets hot outside (like today), it goes up to 85. Do you really find it that bad? The high today was 104. lol

Anyway, since my room is pretty warm, I'm planning to use Albey's method when the eggs come. I got a hova-bator, but I'm not sure if I'll need it.

I live in Kansas by the way.

hmmm... maybe if you put it on low just to insure that it will stay above 80. i'm not sure about the settings on incubators, but there should be a thermometer in it...

that $ will be worth when u hatch out some babies. my house stays around 80-82 so i incubate for females on a shelf and use the incubator for tremper style style females after 2 weeks and males. I havent seen it under 105 here in 2 month. think it was 124f yesterday. good luck

I had a similar problem earlier in the year so what I did was turn it on, and let it go to a high temperature (110* F) I think. From there I kept lowering the temp until I reached 82* F (the temp in my house). That way any drops in temperature were taken care of by the hovabator but it would not overheat.

Also, styrafoam is the best material for an incubator since you want a very well insulated box.
