Choking Dragon!!

grimlin Jul 22, 2007 11:21 PM

My 1 year old dragon was eating crickets and I think she ate too many too fast and she started throwing up and then choking and then she past out and wouldn't respond to anything... we pulled about 6 half chewed crickets out of her throat and she still wouldn't respond... she finally started breathing after about 10- 15 minutes and started to move her tail and legs a little bit and was swallowing... she still looks really bad though... is there anything we can do to help her?

I don't know what else to suggest but to keep her warm and hydrated. I hope she's OK.

I suggest getting her to a vet asap!

If something is lodged in her throat, its not going to go away on its own.

Could it have been a seizure?

I realize that since it was eating it may have appeared to have been choking, and it may very well have been, but since you were the one that saw it, you have to make that call.

The unresponsiveness is what makes me wonder, especially for that long of a period. I don't think choking would cause it to be unresponsive for so long.

Seizures are usually caused by, but not limited to, a calcium deficiency. If it is a calcium deficiency I'd imagine that you'll see tremors, twitches, too.

No matter what it was that happened, I'm sure it was traumatic for your beardie and will take a few days or so for it to recover. If you don't take it to a Vet right away at least keep a close eye on it, keeping watch for any signs of anything else.

Keep us posted.

Have a good one!
