A few Lola pics. +1

Raveness_d Jul 23, 2007 12:51 AM

Lola shed last week. Sadly I wasn't able to get her out in the sun for a photoshoot, but I did grab her up and take some awkward pictures of her anyway.

Sorry, no full body shots. She had a good hold of me, thus making manouvering her and the camera was a little difficult.

And OT. A gorgeous Garter my brother caught the other day.

Any idea on the ssp? Just a sirtalis? He found her in South-Eastern Ontario. I'm not great with my Thamnophis particulars.

lol

Lola says thank you, but Quetzal is getting a little jealous of all the attention his old lady is stirring up!

Just a question while I'm thinking of it. Do females ever lay on their sides for reasons other than being gravid?

They lay on their sides for thermoregulating, more often while gravid but not always. When breeding I always look at is a good sign but not proof of gravidity.

There are three main factors I look for in a gravid girl:

Size - should be a noticable swelling, maybe not localized but she'll look girthier than normal.

Position(s) - (NO Bob, not those positions ) In thermoregulating positions, like you said sometimes on her side, sometimes on her back even. Quite often content to find a comfy spot and just lay there for days, seeming to not even move. I say seeming because I've seen gravid girls moving at night and go right back to the same spot by the next morning.

Appetite - Most of my girls seem to refuse everything while gravid. Occasionally one will eat and this year I have one girl who has eaten a few times but she was a bit thinner than typical for breeding. Last years litter was way late for her - November.

Danielle,
....Great PICs. I am not sure about what the subspecies of that T. sirtalis is. It looks very similar to T. sirtalis sirtalis which has a large range but not sure how far north it extends. I am on another vacation and do not have any books here.
