Just a thought I had...

Clydesdale Jul 23, 2007 10:06 AM

So I'm at this meat market and I ended up buying some alligator meat because I wanted to try it. And I got thinking...

I've heard of people using lizards and even tuna to scent prey for stubborn feeders. Wouldn't alligator scenting be a good idea? I mean, it's a lizard after all. And the meat definitely has a unique smell.

I don't know. Usually, scenting is done by rubbing the prey item on the SKIN of the preferred prey. Whether the smell of the meat has any relation to what a snake would normally smell in the wild, I don't know...

Alligators aren't lizards.
Since the snake is unlikely to have eaten alligator in the wild, you are better off scenting with chicken.

I don't know if aligator would work, but I know when I would scent pinkies for my grey bands I would freeze an anole, cut the belly open and put the pinkies in the belly with a few drops of warm water.

It worked like a charm, much better the rubbing the pinky on a lizard.

I have used toads, several species of frogs, a variety of different lizards, lizard sheds, and gartersnake musk to scent pinkies succesfully.

But the real weird one, to me, is that a lot of people who breed snakes that eat birds have used chicken soup to scent pinkies!

...the chicken soup trick is probably most noted for pythons and the like so you can imagine my surprize when a couple who absolutely doted over their snakes told me they used it on a baby they got from me...A scarlet king!

Alligators aren't lizards, and aren't even closely related to lizards. Snakes are much closer to being lizards than alligators are. Alligators and other crocodilians are more closely related to birds than they are any other "reptile."
