HARLEY64 Jul 23, 2007 12:48 PM

THINKING ABOUT USING DOG KENNELS. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS? THIS WOULD BE FOR ADULTS, NOT SURE IF HOLES IN CHAINLINK ARE TO LARGE.

i kno you have been doing this for 30 years, what best would you recomend... ?? the chain link seems to work well for adult rhino's (4 yrs old)

chain link it wasn't practical for several reasons. The first is that even large iguanas can stick their nose and part of their face thru. Because of that mine continually tried to push thru leaving rubbed marks on their faces. Secondly you can only use it for large lizards. Why not build all enclosures so as they work for any size you want to put outside. The best is 1" x 2" galvanized welded wire. I used that and had no problems...TC

cage on the post below by argus333. That cage is simple, escape proof, and lizard friendly. Argus333 obviously thought out what to do and constructed something that fit his space, pocketbook, and other factors. It is a nice enclosure. The only thing I would have done differently is used welded wire. TC

yea my querntine cage is made out of the small wore mesh ..like the pic in the post below, but i had a rhino develop a bad rubbing problem and had to remove her from her cage .... it was a 4X8X4, although never had a problem before... well i have a putting/ chipping green in my back yard also so i may just take out the grass and lay the plasctic mesh down and then cover with small rocks sand and some grass, and ive found that my large male which is kept outside on my pool deck(lol) he will jump in my pool once and a while when the water level is high enough ... but i have one of those dog kennels and will be putting a 2 foot high barrier around the cage so my females cants see out and then im gonna place a screen like material above the barrier so they wont get out and that will block some of the sun ... cage temp with ehat index gets above 108F some days ... thanks tom for your suggestions... can you post a pic of some of your cages??

I have my adult rhino igauna in a big dog chainlink encloser 10x6x6 with plywood 3 foot high all around the bottom to create a barrier so he cant see out. Hes does great, and has been in thier a long time.

I use 2.25 inch chain link, and have never had a problem with rubbed faces. It is also 100 percent more study than 1x1 welded wire. I do use 1x1 welded wire for the ctenosauras.

This 20x50 foot was eventually subdivided into (2) 10x50's. It worked well for all except one male that was obsessed with fighting with another male that lived in an adjacent half. I had to put up a 15" high wood barier along the base to keep the one male from rubbing his horns down on the chain link. Otherwise, bigger the holes, the more UV that gets in.

SOMETHING BETTER! I USE RUBBER COATED WIRE. CHECK IT OUT IT'S EXPENSIVE BUT WORTH IT. GO TO WADAVISON.COM TO SEE A VARITY OF SIZES.

SORRY IT'S WADAVIDSON.COM

Using PVC coated chain link is best, galvanized steel is toxic. No need to go to a specialty store, it is carried at home depo in both green and black.
