What kind of snake?

bsmarbles Jul 23, 2007 01:56 PM

Not a very good pix, but ... Somehow wandered into our cottage outside Oil City, PA. Northwest PA, in Alleghany Mtns, close to the Alleghany river. Those squares are about 8 inches, so snake is about 2 feet long. Not sure how it got in, don't think it crawled up the stairs.

It looks like a harmless black racer, Coluber constrictor. I would guess that it did indeed crawl in. It is harmless, please help it out gently.

I see an area of white on the edge of the belly which would make it a black rat snake rather than a black racer.

The head posture doesn't strike me as being that of a racer so my best guess is also rat snake. But some closer pictures would be helpful.

For the moment, I'm going with black rat snake too (also completely harmless by the way). I'm at work, so I don't have access to an image editor that I would normally use in a case like this to enhance the pic, but I THINK I can just barely see the pattern along the back. It could just me jpeg artifacts...

Either way, is definitely NOT any of the venomous snakes native to North America, or any of the commonly kept exotic venomous.

What goes up must come down...unless it exceeds escape velocity.
