What is the chance...

Conrad May 21, 2003 09:32 PM

This is my question. Being in eastern NC I don't see any full blooded black or yellow rats "running" around. Greenish's abound. However...I found a very heavy snake earlier this year that isn't a "classic" greenish with the solid black band over a dark olive/drab backing. Instead, it's more of brown bands over a straw/amber yellow colored base color. Could this snake be a pure yellow? Or...what is the chance of it being a hypo greenish? I've heard about hypo greenish's but have never seen one in person. If anyone has any pics of a hypo vs. a more northern yellow rat, I would love to see them to make a comparison. Thanks.

I once had a hypo appearing greenish rat. Had a yellow-green ground color with gray-brown pattern. Had a mixed pattern of stripes and blotches, which is unusual for around here, as most of ours have distinct stripes. Where in NC did you find yours? Would love to see a pic.

I'm going to try to get some pics of this snakes next to one I just came across which is identical in size, but definately not color. The "hypo?" that I have is very classic, straw yellow background with brownish stripes, and light black speckling on the scales. I'll try to get some pics...I've never posting pics on here before so bear with me. Oh, the snake was found in my backyard in Onlsow county a mile or two east of Richlands.

Conrad,
I'm in the construction business in Asheville, NC. I catch more black (and I mean solid, even on most of the belly) rats every year than I ever saw in years living in Durham. If you'd be interesed in a w/c, I can hook you up, probably free if you pay the shipping or come get it. I have pictures including a belly shot of a 5 foot gravid female I "catch" on this one job once a week. They weren't with my digital, so I'll get a disc made up if interested.

I would definitely be interested in a W/C black rat, or actually a pair, as I am into locality breeding. I am up that way a couple of times a year and could pick them up. Let me know.

I'm looking forward to seeing some pics of your hypo. My hypo was caught down here in New Hanover Co. Am also interested in seeing pics of your normal greenish from up in Onslow, as they seem to vary greatly from locality to locality.

I'll get some pics and get them up here as soon as I can. I've seen quite a bit of variance just withing this region. I've seen lots of different darkness or colors and patterns.
