lizzard hangout

kyle231 Jul 23, 2007 07:48 PM

My bearded dragon has a 42 or 55 gallon tank that it lives in. but i cant help but feel that he is cramped. so i want to build a sort of hangout/playground for him in my room. i was thinking like a big box out of plywood with desert scenery around it and then making a little pond out of some tarp like material, and then some sun bathing rocks. has this ever been done before. its like a second terrarrium that i could put him in, in the daytime. i just dont know what materials could be dangerous to him. any help?

A 42 or 55 Gal aquarium is too small for an adult bearded dragon. Why don't you skip the play house idea and build a 4' x 2' enclosure (minimum recommended size for 1 adult) out of melamine.

i agree, your dragon doesnt need a playground or play area, he just needs a bigger cage. like BDLVR said 4x2 feet and 18-24 inches in height. if you want to go even better, make it bigger 5x2 or 5x3 even.

for the amount of trouble to build a playground area for your dragon, you might as well just build a bigger cage. Go for a 5'x2' floor space on his cage, with the heights already mentioned. This gives them plenty of room to run around.

It is also fine to take him out of his cage to free roam under supervision in a safe area. Some people use children's wadding pools to let dragons get a nice bath (with a bit of water in the middle) or to put them in outside for sunlight as well.
