Need help breeding feeder insects

jrbl Aug 19, 2003 04:15 AM

I have been looking around the net for information about breeding certain feeder insects. I am looking to breed Trevo worms aka butterworms. I also want to breed goliath horn worms. I have heard that butter worms only eat parts of the trevo plant. I have found a source of trevo seeds. I thought I could have some plants in an enclosure and have the butter worms live there. Eventually they would metamorphisize into the adult moths, and then they would breed. I just cant find that much information about them, so I dont want to try to breed them unless I know how other people have done it. The goliath horn worms also have limited information, and I would like to breed them as well. ANY information an either of them insects would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, jrbl

I can't help with the butter worms but I can with the horn. They are actually the caterpillar/larva form of the Sphinx moth. If you look up "sphinx moth rearing," you should get lots of information on them. You might also do a search by their latin name. They are a very common moth, all over the US. The horn worms eat tomato and tobacco primarily but will accept many many other substitutes.
